The specification of I-beam is expressed by the centimeter value of waist width. For example, the waist width of No. 10 I-beam is 10cm. The types of I-beam include hot rolled common I-beam, light I-beam and wide parallel leg I-beam (H-beam).
Due to the relatively high and narrow cross-section size of ordinary I-beam and light I-beam, there is a large difference in the moment of inertia between the two main shafts of the cross-section, which limits their application. I-beam shall be selected according to the requirements of design drawings.
I-shaped steel is not only ordinary or light, but also can be used directly for the members bending in the web plane or forming lattice type members because the section size is relatively high and narrow, so the inertia moment of the two main axes of the section is quite different.
It is not suitable for axial compression members or members that are perpendicular to the web plane and bending, which makes them have great limitations in the application range. I-beam is widely used in buildings or other metal structures.
